6. Teasing her

The playful glint in vikram eyes was gone, replaced by a cold, hard face was polite but distant, a stark contrast to the man who had teased Ananya just hours before.

The moment he stepped into his official car. He was DCP Vikram Ramineni.

When his car pulled into the police station, the officers on duty scrambled to attention, their salutes sharp and respectful. They had heard stories about their new DCP from Mumbai that he was strict, dangerously intelligent, and had zero tolerance for corruption.

Vikram gave a curt nod and strode into his office. A constable shot up from his seat, saluting nervously. But the man sitting arrogantly in the visitor's chair didn't even bother to get up.

Something in Vikram triggered. He ignored the man, walked silently to his large wooden desk, and sat down. He leaned back in his leather chair, the springs groaning in the silent room, and fixed the man with a fierce, unwavering glare. Vikram's eyes then flickered to the constable, who began to shiver.

The constable fumbled with his words. "S-Sir... he is..."

"I am Hari Narayan," the man cut in, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Son of MLA Ram Mohan Rao."

Vikram's gaze settled on Hari, cold and unimpressed. "Ayithe enti? Neeku ikkada pani enti?" (So what? What is your business here?)

Hari's face flushed with anger. He stood up, leaning his knuckles on Vikram's desk. "Naku enti pani aa? Nenu MLA kodukuni raa! Ninna ma alcohol van endhuku aapav? Adhi MLA dhi ani thelidha neeku? Inkokasari ila chesthe neeku maryadhaga undadhu!" (What is my business? I am the MLA's son! Why did you stop our alcohol van yesterday? Didn't you know it belongs to the MLA? If you do this again, it won't be respectful for you!)

He was still talking, his voice rising, but Vikram had already heard enough. In one fluid, shockingly fast motion, he stood up. Hari, sensing the shift in energy, instinctively straightened up too.

SLAP!

The sound was like a gunshot in the quiet office. Vikram slapped Hari so hard that he stumbled backward, tripping over the chair and crashing to the ground with a hard thud.

The constable gasped. "Sirr..!" He took a step to help Hari, but one look from Vikram froze him in place.

Vikram calmly walked around his desk and sat on the edge, his legs crossed loosely, looking down at the groaning man on the floor.

"So, Mr. Hari Narayan," Vikram said, his voice dangerously soft. "You were saying something? Ah, yes. "Nee van ni aapindhi nenu ae And that's not all. Meeru chese prathi illegal panulu anni aapesthanu. You being the MLA's son means nothing to me. Idhi naa station. Naku nacchinattu meeru naduchukovali. Ledhante, reaction ilane untundhi. Now go and tell your father this is my last warning."

("I was the one who stopped your van.I will stop every illegal activity you people are is my station. You will act according to my rules. Otherwise, the reaction will be just like this.)

Hari staggered to his feet, holding his stinging cheek, his eyes glaring with pure hatred.

Vikram turned his cold gaze to the trembling constable. '"Nuvvu enti? Veedi thoka vi aa? Na station lo ilantivi naaku nacchavu. Inkokasari veeditho nuvvu kanapadithe, nee job pothundhi."

(And you? Are you his tail? I don't like such things in my station. If I see you with him one more time, your job will be gone.)

"Nanne kodathava? Nee sangathi ento choostha!"

(You dare to hit me? I will see to you!), Hari snarled, before shoving the door open with a loud bang and storming out.

Vikram simply smirked, a cold, predatory expression. He walked back to his chair and sat down as if nothing had happened. Just then, his phone buzzed with a notification. It was a message from Anand.

He opened it and saw the photos from that night in Mumbai. The perfect shot of a drunk, grinning Ananya planting a soft kiss on his cheek. The coldness in his eyes melted away, replaced by a warmth that reached his lips, which curved into a small, private smile.

He stared at the picture for a long moment before locking his phone and getting back to work.

At Evening

After a long and draining day at the station, Vikram felt the tension in his shoulders begin to ease the moment he stepped back into the Ramineni house. The chaos of his professional life seemed to melt away within these old, peaceful walls. He took a quick shower, changing out of his stiff uniform and into a comfortable black t-shirt and grey trousers that hugged his form.

He walked downstairs, his mind quiet for the first time all day. And then he saw her.

Ananya was sitting on a stone bench in the courtyard, bathed in the soft, golden light of the setting sun. A gentle breeze played with the loose strands of her hair that had escaped her messy bun. She was wearing a simple yellow kurti, looking incredibly cute and completely lost in the book resting on her lap.

Vikram stopped in the shadows of the corridor, just watching her. He saw the way her brow furrowed in concentration, the way she unconsciously bit her lower lip as she read. Vikram felt a strange warmth spread through his chest. Finding no one else around, he decided to act.

He walked quietly towards her, his footsteps silent on the stone path. He stood just before the bench and cleared his throat softly.

"Anu."

The name was soft, intimate. Ananya jumped, startled, her book slipping from her lap. She spun around, her eyes wide. They landed on him, and for a moment, she just stared. He wasn't in his formal wear now. The casual t-shirt defined his broad shoulders and muscular arms. His hair was still slightly damp, and without the uniform, he looked younger, more approachable, and impossibly handsome.

Vikram cleared his throat again, a smirk playing on his lips as he watched her openly checking him out.

Ananya's cheeks flushed a deep red. She quickly stood up, embarrassed.

"Em parledhu, choodachu nannu. Nenu em anukonu," he teased, his voice a low, amused rumble.

(It's okay, you can look. I won't mind.)

Ananya's embarrassment quickly turned into indignation. "Mahesh Babu anukuntunnara enti? Nenu em mimalini choodatle!"she said sarcastically, crossing her arms.

(Do you think you're Mahesh Babu or what? I wasn't looking at you!)

Vikram chuckled, enjoying her fiery spirit. "Mahesh Babu antha kakapoyina, nenu handsome gane untanu andi, Anu garu."

(Maybe not as much as Mahesh Babu, but I'm still handsome, Ms. Anu.)

The use of 'Anu' again irked her. "Accha? Anu enti? Na peru Ananya," she stressed, pointing a finger at her chest.

(Oh really? What is this 'Anu'? My name is Ananya.)

"Okay... Ananya," he said, drawing out her name slowly, his gaze intense. "Go and get me a coffee. Nuvve chesi thisukuni raa."

(You have to make it and bring it yourself.)

Ananya's jaw dropped. "Accha? Nenu endhuku cheyyali? Ayina nenu kitchen loki adugu pettindhe ledhu! Alantidhi nee kosam coffee cheyyali aa? Not happening!"

(Oh really? Why should I? Besides, I've barely ever stepped into the kitchen! And you expect me to make coffee for you? Not happening!)

She turned to walk away, convinced she had won the argument.

"Nuvvu ippudu coffee thisukuni rakapothe, nuvvu naku muddhu pettav ani mee intlo vallaki cheppestha," he said calmly from behind her.

(If you don't bring me a coffee right now, I will tell everyone in your house that you kissed me.)

Ananya stopped dead in her tracks. She slowly turned back, a confident smirk on her face. "Cheppandi, sir. Ma intlo evaru mimmalini nammaru."

(Go ahead and tell them, sir. No one in my house will believe you.) She folded her hands across her chest, looking smug.

Vikram's smirk widened. He took his phone out of his pocket, unlocked it with a swipe, and turned the screen towards her. There it was, in crystal clear HD. A picture of her, grinning like an idiot, planting a very definite kiss on his cheek.

Ananya's eyes widened in horror. "Delete it!" she gasped, lunging for the phone.

Vikram was faster. He lifted his hand high above his head. Ananya, desperate, stood on her tiptoes, her body pressing against his as she stretched, trying to reach the phone. She failed miserably. For a moment, she was trapped between his hard body and his raised arm, his scent enveloping her, his amused gaze looking down at her.

"Give it to me!" she demanded, still trying to jump and reach.

"Coffee thisukuni raa, bangaram," he whispered, his voice soft and laced with victory.

(Bring the coffee, darling.)

The nickname, 'Bangaram', sent a jolt straight to her heart. Her neck and ears turned a fiery red. Defeated, she stopped trying and glared at him. She stomped her foot on the ground like a frustrated child and spun around, marching towards the kitchen.

In the kitchen, her mother Suryakantham and her Ammama sita were chatting while cooking dinner. They both looked up in shock as Ananya stormed in, grabbed a pan, and took out the milk.

Suryakantham walked over to her daughter and placed a hand on her forehead. "Anu? Fever emina vacchindhi aa? Enti nuvvu kitchen loki vacchav?"

(Anu? Do you have a fever or something? What are you doing in the kitchen?)

Ananya swatted her hand away, irritated. "Naku fever em ledhu, Amma! Coffee pedthunna, anthe!"

(I don't have a fever, Mom! I'm just making coffee, that's all!)

Her mother and grandmother exchanged a look, then said in unison, "Evariki?"

(For whom?)

Ananya startled, caught off guard. "E-Evariki kadhu, naku ae! Nannu questions aapi mee pani choodandi!" she said, quickly pouring the coffee into a single mug.

(N-Not for anyone, for me! Stop asking me questions and do your work!)

She marched back to the courtyard and stood stiffly in front of Vikram, who was now scrolling through his phone, looking completely relaxed. She thrust the mug towards him.

"Coffee," she said, her voice dripping with annoyance.

Vikram looked up from his phone, his eyes dancing with amusement. He didn't take the mug. "Konchem navvuthu ivvochu ga?"

(You could give it with a little smile, no?)

Ananya's eyes narrowed. She plastered a painfully fake, toothy grin on her face. "Hehehe... coffee thisukondi, sirrr..." she said through gritted teeth.

(Hehehe... please take your coffee, sirrr...)

Vikram laughed, a genuine, hearty laugh that made her stomach flutter. He reached for the mug. As he took it, his fingers deliberately brushed against hers. A jolt, like a tiny bolt of electricity, shot up her arm. Their eyes met, and the air crackled with a sudden, intense heat. She snatched her hand back as if burned.

He took a slow sip of the coffee, his gaze never leaving her face. Ananya, desperate to escape the intense stare, mumbled, barely audible, "Coffee bagundhi ani compliment kuda ledhu." (He didn't even say the coffee was good.) She waited, hoping he'd hear, hoping for some acknowledgment.

Vikram, however, just took another sip, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips. He simply continued to drink his coffee, enjoying the moment, the playful power dynamics, and the undeniable chemistry.

Ananya's face turned a deeper shade of red. He'd heard her! He was doing this on purpose! With a frustrated huff, she turned and stomped away, muttering under her breath, leaving Vikram to finish his coffee, a thoughtful, victorious smile on his lips. He had won the battle, but he was starting to realize that the war for his heart was already lost.
