16. Jathara

Vikram and Anand walked into Vikram's room, the serious mood of their security discussion melting away the moment the door closed. He tossed some of his casual clothes to Anand.

"Change into these," he said, and Anand disappeared into the bathroom to freshen up. Vikram, meanwhile, had just opened the first two buttons of his own shirt when Anand came out, vigorously drying his wet hair... with Vikram's another shirt.

Vikram's eyes narrowed. He walked over and gave Anand a solid smack on the back of his head. "Adigithe towel isthanu kadha raa!" (If you had asked, I would have given you a towel, man!)

"Rey, kottaku raa ala!" Anand whined, rubbing his head. (Hey, don't hit me like that!)

"Ela? Ilana?"Vikram retorted, giving him another, harder smack. (Like what? Like this?)

"Rey, entra nuvvu?! Aagara nuvvu!" Anand yelled, lunging for him. (Hey, what's with you?! Just wait!)

A full-blown wrestling match were just two best friends, two brothers, hitting and chasing each other around the room like overgrown schoolboys. Their laughter echoed as they stumbled, finally tripping over a rug and crashing onto the bed in a tangled, compromising heap, with Anand on top of Vikram, trying to pin him down.

Just then, the door creaked open.

Ananya stood there, her eyes widening, taking in the scene before her Vikram and Anand, entangled on the bed in a position that looked... questionable.

The fight paused. Vikram and Anand froze, looking up at her, their laughter dying in their throats. With a jolt, they scrambled off the bed, standing awkwardly.

Ananya, recovering from her initial shock, marched into the room. She walked right past Anand and stood protectively in front of Vikram, shielding him as if Anand were a predator. She glared at Anand, her eyes narrowed.

"Meeru na friend Radhika ni kiss chesaru! Ippudu Vikram ni kuda kiss cheddam anukuntunnara?!" she accused. (You kissed my friend Radhika! Now you're trying to kiss Vikram too?!) "Nenu ala jaraganivvanu!" (I won't let that happen!)

Anand's jaw dropped. He stared at her, completely bewildered. "Nenu endhuku Vikram ni kiss chestha?"he asked, his voice a squeak of pure confusion. (Why would I kiss Vikram?)

Vikram, behind Ananya, started to chuckle, a deep, rumbling sound.

"Then em chesthunnaru meeru iddharu adhe ala..be..d paina?"she stammered, pointing a finger at the still-rumpled bed. (Then what were the two of you doing like that on the bed?)

Anand, seeing her genuine, misplaced concern, held up his hands in surrender, "dandam Thalli! Mem kiss chesukovatle, fight jaruguthundhi ikkada!" he explained, a desperate laugh in his voice. (We weren't kissing, a fight was happening here!)

Vikram, thoroughly enjoying this scene, wrapped his arms around Ananya from behind, pulling her back against his hard chest. "Choodu, Bangaram. Vadu nannu manhandling chesthunnadu," he whispered innocently, resting his chin on her shoulder, his warm breath tickling her ear. (Look, darling. He was manhandling me.)

"You don't worry, I'm here right?" she said, patting his hand reassuringly, completely falling for his act.

Anand looked at them, his face a picture of annoyance and exasperation. "Rey Vikram! Naku entra idhi?" he whined. (Hey Vikram! What is this for me?)

Vikram just chuckled, tightening his hug on a now-confused Ananya. "We were just fighting, Anu," he finally admitted.

She looked from Vikram's grinning face to Anand's exasperated one and slowly said, "Okay... I believe you." She turned to them. "Amma is calling you both for dinner," she announced, then quickly made her escape.

"Anu..." Anand started to tease, but Vikram cut him off. "Rey, aapara," he said, a wide, happy smile on his face. (Hey, stop it.)

During dinner, Vikram's eyes were constantly on Ananya. As she reached for a glass of water, he subtly placed his leg on hers under the table. She froze, a jolt of electricity shooting through her. She looked at him, her eyes wide. He just gave her a small nod upwards, a silent command, before finishing his dinner and leaving.

A few minutes later, Ananya also excused herself. She went to his room, but he wasn't there. She knew where to find him. She slowly made her way up the stairs to the terrace.

The moment she stepped out into the cool night air, a strong arm snaked around her waist, pulling her back against a hard chest and pinning her to the wall. She gasped. "Vikr...am," she whispered, her head tilting back, her eyes finding his in the moonlight.

He didn't speak. He just looked at her, his eyes dark with an emotion that made her tremble. He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss on her cheek, then hugged her tightly, his entire body molding against hers. "I'm tired, Bujji," he whispered, the name a tender caress. He leaned his head into the crook of her neck, his warm breath fanning her skin. (I'm tired, little one.)

Ananya smiled, a soft sigh escaping her. She lifted her hand, her fingers gently massaging his scalp, working through his thick hair. A deep, pleased sound rumbled in Vikram's chest, and he tightened his grip, snuggling more into her, his nose nuzzling her neck.

"Huhh," Ananya gasped, a shiver running through her as Vikram tightened his grip too tight. "Enti, champedham anukuntunnara?" she whispered, a playful tease in her voice. (What, are you planning to kill me?)

Vikram chuckled against her skin. "Enti? Dhinike ila feel ayithe, mari next chese vati sangathi...?" (What? If you feel like this just for this, then what about the things I'll do next...?)

Her cheeks turned crimson. "Siggu ledhu aa?" she whispered, hitting his arm lightly. (Have you no shame?)

"Ledhu. Ayina, nee dhaggara siggu enti, Bujjulu?" he murmured, pressing a kiss to her cheek. (No. Besides, what's the need for shame with you, anu?)

He slowly pulled away, taking her hand and leading her towards the large water tank at the edge of the terrace. He sat down on the edge, then pulled her to sit in front of him, wrapping his arms around her from behind, her back resting comfortably against his chest. They looked up at the blanket of stars, the cool night air a perfect contrast to the warmth of their embrace.

After a long, peaceful silence, Ananya spoke. "Vikram, meeku thelusa? Radhika and Anand sir..." (Vikram, did you know? Radhika and Anand sir...)

Before she could finish, he whispered in her ear, "Thelusu, Bujji." (I know, little one.)

She turned her head, pouting. "Mari naku endhuku cheppaledhu?" (Then why didn't you tell me?)

Vikram chuckled, his chest vibrating against her back. "Adhi neeku thelusu anukunna,"he said genuinely. (I thought you already knew.)

"I didn't! By the way, is Anand sir a good guy? Endhukante, Radhika chala manchidhi" she said, a note of sisterly concern in her voice. (Because Radhika is a very good girl.)

"Vadu chala manchodu. Vadiki mundhu elanti love affairs kuda levu," Vikram assured her, his voice sincere. (He's a very good man. He's never had any love affairs before.)

"Ok," she said, satisfied. Then, a new thought struck her. She whispered, her voice barely audible,"uhmm mari meeku? "

(Uhm... what about you?)

Vikram laughed softly. "Enti, naaku?" he teased. (What, about me?)

"Girlfriends unnara...?"she asked weakly. (Did you have any girlfriends...?)

His arms tightened around her. "Leru, Bujji. Naku ninnu choosinappudu vacchina feeling, inkokarini choosinappudu eppudu anipinchaledhu," he said, his voice raw with sincerity as he rested his head on her shoulder. (No, little one. The feeling I get when I see you, I've never felt that seeing anyone else.)

Ananya's heart melted. She turned in his arms to face him. "My cutie pie," she whispered, and before he could react, she pinched his cheeks and gave him a quick, sweet peck on the lips.

Then, she hugged him tightly, locking her legs around his waist, her body flush against his. Vikram was stunned, a sharp intake of breath the only sound he made. His control, already hanging by a thread, was threatening to snap. He took a deep, shaky breath. He slowly took her face in his hands, his thumbs caressing her cheeks. He looked deep into her eyes, a silent question, asking for permission.

She didn't need any words. She just nodded, her eyes fluttering shut.

He leaned in, their lips are about to touch...

"Rey, Vikram! Unnava raa?!" Anand's voice boomed from the other side of the locked terrace door, followed by a loud knock.

They startled, jumping apart. "Vidiki asalu timing ae thelidhu!"Vikram cursed under his breath, a frustrated groan escaping him. (This guy has no sense of timing!)

Ananya just smiled, a breathless, knowing smile.

Vikram slowly went and unlocked the door. Anand stepped out. "Rey, em chesthunnav ra okkadivi...?" he started, then stopped, his eyes landing on a flustered Ananya. A slow, mischievous smirk spread across his face. "Oho! So, sir is busy with his love," he teased.

Ananya's cheeks turned a furious red. She gave Vikram one last, quick glance and then practically fled down the stairs. Vikram watched her go, a small, fond smile playing on his face. He turned to Anand and playfully punched his arm.

"Ahh! Entra?!"Anand hissed, rubbing the spot. (Ahh! What was that for?!)

"Endhuku ra eppudu disturb chesthav?" Vikram hissed back, a mixture of annoyance and amusement in his voice. (Why do you always have to disturb us?)

Anand just laughed, a deep, knowing sound. They talked for a while longer, the seriousness of the next day's Jathara looming, before finally heading down to their room to sleep.

In the morning of the Jathara with the Ramineni house in a delightful state of chaos. Surya and Sita, fueled by tradition and caffeine, bustled in the kitchen, a symphony of clanking pots and sizzling spices as they prepared an array of festive dishes. The aroma of pulihora, payasam, and spicy curries filled every corner.

Meanwhile, the men – Raghava, Sudhakar, Vikram, and Anand – had already made their way to the temple ground. They moved through the bustling preparations, Vikram and Anand, ever vigilant, meticulously checking security arrangements.

Back at the house, Ananya and Radhika were cheerfully lending a hand, chopping vegetables and stirring gravies, their laughter punctuating the kitchen's busy rhythm.

Soon, the men returned, hungry and tired from the morning's oversight. They devoured the delicious lunch, a sense of quiet satisfaction settling over the house.

As evening approached, the real magic of the Jathara began. Everyone started getting ready, the house abuzz with anticipation.

Ananya, with Radhika's help, chose a traditional langa voni – a deep, rich indigo blue with silver threadwork that shimmered with every movement. Her hair was braided, adorned with fresh jasmine, and a delicate silver vaddanam (waist chain) adorned her slender waist.

She came down the stairs slowly, gracefully, like an angel descending from the heavens. Vikram was standing downstairs, talking with Anand, a serious expression on his face as they discussed some last-minute details. The moment his eyes caught sight of Ananya, he froze. His conversation died. Anand, following his gaze, turned and also paused.

Ananya looked ethereal. The langa voni hugged her curves perfectly, the silver waist chain drawing attention to her slender midsection. Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and a shy, knowing smile touched her lips.

Vikram couldn't tear his gaze away. His eyes, usually so sharp and analytical, were utterly captivated, tracing the line of her waist, the gentle sway of her hips as she walked. He felt a familiar, powerful tightening in his chest, a possessive ache.

She reached the bottom of the stairs, standing beside her Amma, a vision of traditional beauty. Her eyes met Vikram's across the crowded living room, and a playful, almost imperceptible wink, a secret between them, sparked between them. Vikram stood like a stone, completely mesmerized, his mouth slightly agape.

"Rey Vikram! Noru moosko raa, eegalu dooripothayi!" Anand teased, nudging him playfully, a wide grin on his face. (Hey Vikram! Close your mouth, man, flies will enter!)

Vikram just shook his head, a small, helpless smile forming on his lips.

Soon, the entire Ramineni family, along with Vikram and Anand, made their way to the temple. After the traditional prayers, they ventured into the bustling marketplace, towards shops selling everything from colorful toys to sparkling jewellery.

All this time, Vikram's eyes were subtly, constantly, on Ananya. He tracked her every move, every smile, every excited gasp. His hand instinctively reached for her if she strayed too far, a silent, protective tether.

Ananya and Radhika, like excited children, walked towards a bangle shop, their faces glowing in the warm glow of the shop lights. Ananya's eyes fell on a set of delicate glass bangles – a beautiful shade of lavender that perfectly matched her langa voni. Her face lit up. She pointed to them, asking the seller to give her that set.

The shopkeeper, a kindly old man, asked her to extend her hand. As Ananya did so, Vikram's hand shot out, catching hers gently. He intercepted the bangles from the seller, his eyes locking onto Ananya's. He slowly, deliberately, pushed the bangles onto her slender wrist, his fingers brushing her skin, his gaze deep and possessive, a silent claim.

This intimate gesture, this raw display of possessiveness in a crowded market, caused Ananya's heart to flutter wildly. A deep, genuine smile broke on her face, her eyes shining with affection. She loved how he effortlessly made her feel cherished and protected.

They continued browsing, moving from one vibrant stall to another, admiring different things. Vikram's smile, however, vanished abruptly. His jaw tightened. He had seen Hari Narayan.

Hari was walking towards them, a smug, unsettling smile already forming on his face. Vikram's entire body tensed, preparing for confrontation. He subtly moved closer to Ananya, his body a silent shield, ready to strike if Hari made a wrong move. Anand, sensing Vikram's tension, immediately straightened, his gaze also fixing on Hari, ready for action.

Hari, however, didn't approach Vikram directly. His smile, wide and chilling. Vikram was ready to hit him, to stop him from even breathing the same air as Ananya. But Hari didn't come closer.

Instead, Hari walked past them. Vikram's confusion was momentary. Hari Narayan went behind Vikram, where Raghava stood, deep in conversation with some village elders. Vikram's eyes widened in alarm. He immediately thought Hari would harm his grandfather. He quickly, silently, started to move towards Raghava.

But as he watched, Hari Narayan bent down, touching Raghava's feet in a gesture of profound respect, taking his blessings. Raghava, surprised but pleased by the unexpected gesture, smiled warmly at Hari. Hari then straightened up, his eyes meeting Vikram's over Raghava's shoulder. A slow, triumphant, devilish smirk spread across Hari's face, cold and calculating.

Vikram's blood ran cold. He understood instantly. This wasn't a show of respect. This was a warning. A public display of power. Hari was playing a much bigger, much more dangerous game. He wasn't just threatening Ananya, manipulating the family, trying to show Vikram that he had roots, that he could play the 'good son' to the elders while harboring evil intentions. He was planning something big. Something much worse than a physical confrontation.
