21. Hurt

Surprise....

"Kavya!" Arun called towards the open door.

A woman walked in from outside, almost hesitant smile on her face. She stood beside Arun, her hand finding his. It was Kavya. Vikram's sister, Kavya.

"Akka," Vikram whispered, the name a choked sound in his throat. He couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. His mind struggled to comprehend. Kavya? Here? With Ananya's brother? Holding his hand? The questions slammed into him, one after another.

What is she doing here? Who the heck is he? Why is she with him?Nothing made sense. The carefully constructed walls around his mission, his identity, his heart, suddenly felt fragile, threatened.

Kavya, blinded by nervousness and the overwhelming presence of Arun's family, hadn't seen Vikram yet. She offered a tentative, polite smile to Arun's family.

The warm, welcoming smiles on the Ramineni family's faces instantly faded, replaced by stunned silence, then confusion. Ananya, too, looked bewildered. She didn't know this woman.

Surya was the first to break the heavy silence. "Evaru Arun, ee ammayi?" she asked, her voice laced with confusion, looking from her son to the unfamiliar woman. (Who is this girl, Arun?)

Arun took a deep breath, his grip tightening on Kavya's hand. "Amma, thanu Kavya,"he paused, looking at his stunned family, his gaze finally settling on his grandfather with a mix of respect and determination.

He pulled Kavya slightly forward. "Kavya nenu preminchukuntunnam. Pelli chesukundham anukuntunnam, Amma."(Mom, this is Kavya. Kavya and I love each other. We want to get married, Mom.)

He dropped the bomb. Gasps echoed through the room. Kavya kept her head lowered, unable to meet the shocked stares.

Arun continued quickly, laying out their story. "Kavya nenu kalisi chaduvukunnam. Na final year lo nenu propose chesa, and she accepted. Thanu Mumbai lo untundhi, thana family tho..." (Kavya and I studied together. I proposed in my final year, and she accepted. She lives in Mumbai with her family...) He gave a brief, respectful overview of Kavya and her background. Kavya slowly lifted her head, offering a shaky "Namaste" to the stunned family.

Surya looked utterly shocked. "Entra idhi?!" (What is this?!) Ananya's father, krishna murthy, looked equally taken aback, his eyes darting between his son and Kavya.

Arun, sensing the rising disapproval, gently pulled Kavya's wrist, leading her towards his grandfather. He stood before Raghava, tall and resolute, Kavya trembling slightly beside him.

"Thathayya, thanu ante naaku ishtam. Nenu ante thanaki ishtam. Meeku cheppi matrame pelli chesukundham anukunnanu, Thathayya,"he pleaded, his voice earnest. (Grandfather, I love her. She loves me. I only wanted to marry her after telling you, Grandfather.)

Raghava looked sternly at Arun, then his gaze softened slightly as he took in Kavya's nervous face. "Nenu mee andharini oppinchi pelli chesukundham anukunna, Thathayya."(I wanted to marry her after convincing all of you, Grandfather.)

Raghava remained silent for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he asked a sharp, testing question. "Ippudu memu vaddhu ante, aa ammayini vadhilesthava?"(Now, if we say no, will you leave this girl?)

Kavya's hand clutched Arun's tightly, her knuckles white. Arun didn't even take a second to answer. "No,"he said, his voice firm, unwavering. "Nenu thanani vadhalanu, Thathayya. Thanu nannu nammi vacchindhi. Nenu thanani ila madhyalo vadhileyalenu." (I will not leave her, Grandfather. She came here trusting me. I cannot leave her like this in the middle.)

Krishna murthy shouted, "Arun...!"

Raghava held up a hand, silencing his son-in-law. He looked searchingly at Arun, then at Kavya. He saw the determination, the love. "Ok. Ammayi valla family sangathi enti? Vallu oppukunnara?" (Okay. What about the girl's family? Have they agreed?)

"Kavya valla Nanna oppukunnaru, Thathayya," Arun said confidently. (Kavya's father has agreed, Grandfather.)

Vikram froze again. Nanna agreed? He knew? The sense of betrayal intensified, a cold shard twisting in his chest.

Raghava considered this, then finally nodded slowly. "Ok then. Ananya pelli ayyaka ee vishayam kosam alochidham. Ammayini lopaliki thisukuvellandi."(Okay then. We will think about this after Ananya's wedding. Take the girl inside.)

Relief washed over Arun and Kavya. Ananya immediately went to Kavya's side, offering her a warm, welcoming smile. She respected her brother's choice, his determination. As Ananya started leading Kavya towards the stairs, chattering introductions, "I'm Ananya, Arun's sister..." Kavya followed, her shoulders relaxing slightly.

They reached the steps. Ananya went first. Kavya, about to follow, finally saw him. Standing near the entrance, his face a mask of cold fury, his eyes burning into hers. She gasped, stopping dead. "Vikram," she whispered, her voice barely audible, filled with shock and dread.

Vikram's eyes were ice. He was angry at her secrecy, disappointed by her lack of trust, hurt that she hadn't shared the most important decision of her life with him.

He saw the plea in her eyes, the beginning of an explanation forming on her lips. As she took a hesitant step towards him, he turned sharply and walked away, disappearing outside.

Kavya's eyes blurred with tears. She wanted to run after him, to explain, to make him understand. But her feet felt rooted to the spot.

Ananya stopped halfway up the stairs, noticing Kavya wasn't following. She saw Kavya standing frozen, staring towards the door where Vikram had just vanished. "Meeru natho paiki randi. Naa room ki veldham,"Ananya called back gently, sensing her distress. (Please come upstairs with me. Let's go to my room.)

Kavya startled, pulling her gaze away, forcing a wobbly smile. "Huhh? Vasthunna, andi,"she replied, her voice strained. (Huh? I'm coming.) She followed Ananya up the stairs, her heart heavy with unshed tears and unspoken apologies.

Vikram strode out into the courtyard, needing air, needing space. He saw Arun standing near Raghava. His grandfather called him over. "Vikram babu!"

Vikram went near Raghava, forcing a neutral expression. "Cheppandi, Thathayya Garu." (Yes, Grandfather?)

"Veedu Arun, naa manavadu,"Raghava introduced Arun proudly. (This is Arun, my grandson.)

"Arun, ee babu mana ooriki vacchina kottha police officer,"he introduced Vikram to Arun. (Arun, this gentleman is the new officer who has come to our village.)

Arun extended his hand again, his earlier confusion replaced by a warm, genuine smile. "Good to meet you properly, vikram."

Vikram looked at Arun's outstretched hand, then into his eyes. He saw sincerity, happiness. He forced himself to shake it, the contact brief, cold. Arun's smile faltered slightly again. Vikram offered no smile in return, just a curt nod, the disappointment churning inside him. Making a polite but abrupt excuse about needing to make a call, Vikram turned and walked away again, leaving Arun looking confused and slightly hurt.

Vikram strode to a deserted bench, his fingers dialing his father's number with sharp.

"Hello, Nanna," he said the moment the call connected.

"Hello Vikram! Ela unnav raa?" (Hello Vikram! How are you?)

"Nanna, Kavya ekkada undhi?" Vikram demanded. (Dad, where is Kavya?)

A pause. "Adhi... Vikram..." (That... Vikram...)

"Kavya ekkada, Nanna?" he gritted out. (Where is Kavya, Dad?)

Raghuram sighed. "Kavya... Kavya Arun ane abbayini preminchindhi, Vikram. Arun valla family ni oppinchataniki vellindhi." (Kavya... Kavya loves a boy named Arun, Vikram. She went to convince Arun's family.)

"Endhuku naaku cheppaledhu, Nanna?" Vikram asked, the hurt raw in his voice. (Why didn't you tell me, Dad?)

"Vikram, ala kadhu nanna. Arun chala manchivadu. Kavya neeku mundhu cheppali anukundhi, kaani nuvvu em antavo ani bhayapadindhi. Arun valla family ni oppinchaaka neetho cheppali anukundhi, Vikram," Raghuram explained gently.

(Vikram, it's not like that, son. Arun is a very good man. Kavya wanted to tell you earlier, but she was scared of what you might say. She wanted to tell you after convincing Arun's family, Vikram.)

Vikram released a long, deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose. He didn't speak.

"Vikram?"

"Nenu malli call chestha, Nanna," Vikram said flatly and ended the call. (I'll call again later, Dad.) He sank onto the bench, his head in his hands. Kavya. Scared of him? Arun, Ananya's brother. His father knew. The secrets felt suffocating, the situation impossibly tangled.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Ananya led Kavya into her guest room. "Meeru ikkada free ga undachu," Ananya said warmly. (You can be comfortable here.)

Kavya nodded, trying to appear relaxed.

"So," Ananya began, a playful glint returning, "Meeku aa Annayya ante ishtam aa?" (So, you like that brother of mine?)

A small, genuine smile touched Kavya's lips. She nodded slowly, blushing.

"So, nenu mimmalini 'Vadhina' ani pilavacha?" Ananya asked excitedly. (So, I can call you 'Vadhina'?)

Kavya blushed deeper but nodded, a flicker of happiness in her eyes.

"Meedhi Mumbai aa? Nenu kuda Mumbai lo naa graduation complete chesa!" Ananya chattered. (You're from Mumbai? I also completed my graduation in Mumbai!)

"Naku thelusu Mee kosam Arun chala cheppadu," Kavya replied politely. (Arun has told me a lot about you.)

They talked for a while longer, Ananya bubbling with questions and excitement. But Kavya's mind was elsewhere. Her smile felt strained. She desperately needed to find Vikram, to talk to him, to explain everything. The weight of his cold anger felt heavier than anything else.
